Art
Intent
St William’s aims to provide a high-quality Art education that will engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As 'a School of Enquiry' pupils will progress, they will be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. As a 'School of Diversity' our pupils will also know how art and design both reflects and shapes our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
Implementation
At St William’s we aim for all pupils :
- to create work, explore their ideas and record their experiences. As a school of Oracy expressing their feelings through art provides the children with time to discuss and reflect.
- to become skilled in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques including through cross-curricular links, Art and craft after school clubs and Art workshops with Tony Bullock.
- to evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design through discussion as a pair group or class.
- to know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art form including visits to art galleries.
- to use high quality texts and as a school of Reading we enable the children to research artists from different eras and countries.
- to use and experience and use a range of media including wool, clay and material.
- to experience, through RE, the use of images from the Catholic Faith and other faiths including important times from the Bible and the Churches year. As a school of Faith and Diversity other Faiths, traditions and culture are reflected through other Faith Week.
- to use the outdoor space we have at St William’s to create and have some reflective time to create pieces of art work, improving their Physical and Mental wellbeing.
As a 'School of Mastery' there is no ceiling to a child’s creative development. EAL, SEND and children working at depth are encouraged to progress at their own pace. Advice from Cognition and Learning specialists supports our art curriculum throughout the school.
Impact
Pupils will be able to access the Art secondary school curriculum successfully and will have the essential skills and personal characteristics to support active participation in lessons; that enable them to express and articulate their artistic ideas and thinking in a variety of ways (verbal, written, artistically). They will be independent, self-aware and have the ability to form strong relationships that will enable then to become life-long learners and well-rounded citizens, who can make a positive contribution to our diverse and global artistic society.
