Mathematics
Intent
Mathematics is important in everyday life and, with this is mind, the purpose of Mathematics at St William’s is to develop an ability to solve problems, to reason, to think logically and to work systematically and accurately. All children are challenged and stimulated to achieve in Maths.
As a ‘School of Enquiry’ Mathematical concepts are taught using a ‘Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract’ approach; enabling all children to experience hands-on learning when discovering new mathematical topics and allows them to have clear models and images to aid their understanding. There is a clear sequence in learning from our youngest children, all the way through to year 6.
Implementation
The following are key priorities to St. William’s Curriculum and will help us to achieve this through:
- Basic Maths skills are taught daily using the White Rose Maths Hub. Focusing on key mathematical skills including place value, the four operations and fractions.
- As a ‘School of Oracy’ discussion is fully embedded within the maths curriculum, children can confidently add, build and challenge what their peers are saying, further strengthening confidence and fluency within maths.
- As a ‘School of Mastery’ We follow the Mastery approach where each child completes the same level of work but progresses through at their own pace to remove barriers to their learning, removing the ceiling to their potential, whilst providing a range of reasoning resources are used to challenge all children and give them the opportunity to reason with their understanding.
- As a ‘School of Enquiry’ our children are exposed to enquiry-based questioning, allowing them work hands-on with a range of concrete, pictorial and abstract methods to their maths learning.
- Same day interventions are used to support children to ensure children are ready for their next Maths lesson.
- Lessons use a Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract approach to guide children through their understanding of mathematical processes.
- Where possible, links are made with other subjects across the curriculum.
- To solve problems, to reason, to think logically and to work systematically and accurately. All our children are challenged and encouraged to excel in Maths.
- We provide all our learners including SEND and EAL scaffolding learning through same-day interventions and use of concrete, pictorial and abstract approaches.
- We challenge children working at greater depth with a range of reasoning and problem-solving activities.
Impact:
In Maths you will regularly see, children who are engaged and challenged whilst being confident enough to discuss their learning with a focus on using mathematical vocabulary, the children will be able to link confidently between mathematical topics. In our classrooms, you will see a range of resources to aid children’s learning and to meet the needs of all learners in the classroom. A range of structures and representations will be used to allow for an understanding of the different mathematical concepts and procedures. Regular tracking and monitoring will ensure all of our children make good progress.
