PE Premium

 Physical Education Premium Grant

PE and Sport play a very important part in the life of St William’s Catholic Primary School, where there are at least two sessions per week dedicated to physical activity in the curriculum, along with further opportunities to ensure all our pupils are achieving at least 30 minutes of daily activity within school. We believe that physical education and sport contribute to the development of children and through participation in sport and physical education, young people learn more about key values such as teamwork, fair play and respect for themselves and others.

There is significant evidence to show the positive effects of sport and exercise on children’s physical health, growth and development. PE improves motor skills and increases muscle strength and bone density, which in turn makes students more likely to engage in healthy activity outside of school. Furthermore it educates children on the positive benefits of exercise and allows them to understand how good it can make them feel. Sport also provides a healthy environment for young people to learn how to deal with competition and how to cope with both winning and losing.

Our focus for this year (2022/2023) we are using the PE and School Sport Premium (£17,350) to improve the quality of PE and Sport provision in the following ways:

  • To organise an additional after school sports club (using the pupil voice survey for sports ideas)
  • To fund a Martial Arts specialist coach to work with all year groups throughout the year to develop children's personal and social skills e.g. resilience, self-confidence, self-control and self-belief to overcome challenges.
  • Provide adult led break and dinner time activities using a variety of sport equipment - leading to a higher level of pupil engagement resulting a reduction in accidents at these times.
  • Providing a scheme of work for PE that offers a broad and balanced sports curriculum.
  • Enabling children to attend more competitions, and to increase pupils’ participation in school games competitions.
  • Ensuring all children have access to and subsidising extra-curricular activities throughout the year allowing them to lead even more active lives, including:
    • Develop an effective and appropriate swimming programme for Years 5 and 4.
    • Replenishing consumable resources to support our engaging curriculum and ensure all children can participate in PE lessons.
    • Purchase new resources to enable delivery of broad PE curriculum.
    • Whole school 'Active Week' to include opportunities for children to participate in a variety of outdoor and sporting activities that they would not normally be exposed to eg. Archery, golf, tennis, dance, circus skills, Hot Shot Penalty Shoot etc.
    • Support and involve the least active children by providing targeted activities, and running or extending school sports.
    • Introduce new sports, dance or other activities to encourage more pupils to take up sport and physical activities.
    • Work with the Living well team (reducing inequality in communities) to support staff and pupils.
    • Ensure that our outdoor equipment continues to motivate children to be active at playtimes.
