Relationships and Sex Education (R.S.E)
At St William's we have embraced teaching Relationships and Health Education by following the TEN:TEN scheme
Ten Ten’s new programme for Catholic primary schools, Life to the Full, will teach Relationships Education and Health Education within the context of a Christian understanding rooted in the wisdom and teaching of the Catholic Church.
Given that RHE (Relationships and Health Education) will become a statutory subject for all schools from September 2020, we are embracing “the challenges of creating a happy and successful adult life” by giving pupils knowledge “that will enable them to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships” (DFE Statutory Guidance).
We will deliver this teaching through the prism of Catholic RSHE. The framework of our programme is taken from the Model Catholic RSE Programme by the Catholic Education Service, which has been highlighted by the Department of Education as a work of good practice.
Life to the Full is a fully resourced Scheme of Work in Relationships and Health Education (RHE) for Catholic primary schools which embraces and fulfils the new statutory curriculum. Taught with a spiral approach to learning, in which pupils will revisit the same topics at an age-appropriate stage through their school life, the programme includes teaching about personal health, physical and emotional wellbeing, strong emotions, private parts of the body, personal relationships, family structures, trusted adults, growing bodies, puberty, periods, life cycles, the dangers of social media, where babies come from, an understanding of the Common Good and living in the wider world. The entire teaching is underpinned with a religious understanding that our deepest identity is as a child of God - created chosen and loved by God. The programme is fully inclusive of all pupils and their families.

Intent
Personal, Social, Health and Emotional wellbeing underpins how children learn. It is vital that we continuously support the wellbeing of all children at St Williams to enable them to meet their full potential. We promote the British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect of different faiths. As a School of Diversity we are a school rich in culture, that celebrates diversity and what we can learn from one another. We promote the virtues of tolerance, respect and compassion so that we can effectively participate in our diverse local community. We are champions of an inclusive and a multilingual school with British Values at our core. We provide children with cultural activities and experiences that enrich their learning. We ensure that our children have a secure knowledge of the Catholic faith and other world faiths.
Implementation
Unique- All children are individuals with their own personalities, and we respect and celebrate our differences.
Catholic Education Service- Our RSE. curriculum is based on the Catholic teachings and values, including the school virtues of love, kindness, respect and love of learning. The 3 modules cover the following: Created and Loved by God, Created to Love Others and Created to Live in Community. We teach children that everyone is special and deserves to be treated with the upmost respect.
Broad curriculum- Our PSHE curriculum incorporates the Relationship and Sex Education as required by the government from 2021. We use Ten: Ten; Life to the Full resource to teach the subject, this is linked in with Bible scripture and Gospel virtues to ensure our children are going out into the world as respectful individuals. Our topics include Me, My Body, My Health; Emotional Wellbeing, Personal Relationships, Keeping Safe and Living in the Wider World.
Pupil leadership- Each class votes for their school council representative and Mini Vinnies. They share their thoughts on different topics and the council meets together to make improvements. The Mini Vinnies plan regular fundraising ideas to raise money for charity.
Mental health- Our Mental Health Champion provides resources and ideas to support children’s mental health. Each class contains a worry box so children can write down their worries. A member of staff will then follow up with the child and provide support to resolve their worry. Our learning mentor also provides activities for children who need extra support. Through the incorporation of The Zones of Regulation, this allows our children to explore feelings associated with the different emotions they may be feeling. As a School of Mental Wellness we teach children to recognise and explain their feelings and emotions. We ensure all children and young people know who they can talk to about their feelings and problems and seek external support when needed. We ensure all adults in school can recognise signs and offer appropriate support for our families.
Here at St William’s we have a designated Senior Leader for Mental Health for Pupils, this is Mrs. Georgina Smith
Impact
Children will have the self-confidence and resilience to meet their full potential and prepare them for the next part of their educational journey. They will have developed healthy lifestyles and relationships to enable them to lead a rewarding adult life. They will contribute positively to their community and wider world, becoming morally and socially responsible.
